Mar 2 MCA Rockville Quads for K-12 Players. This is a US Chess rated quads style chess tournament. Each player is placed in a group of 4 players according to their age and rating. Each participant then plays one game against each of the other three players in their group. At the end of the third game, the winner of each group receives a trophy. Quads typically finish in 1-2 hours, but can potentially take as long as 3 hours, although that is rare. Games are 25 minutes with a 5 second delay for each player, for players using clocks. Mar 9 Robert C. Weaver Chess Challenge. In Wash DC on Sat. March 9th. An Open section and multiple Scholastic sections of play!! Come out and help us celebrate the life and accomplisments of Robert Clifton Weaver (1907-1997), an American economist, academic, and political administrator who served as the first United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from 1966 to 1968, when the department was newly established by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Weaver was the first African American to be appointed to a US cabinet-level position. He was born in Washington, DC, and attended the M Street High School, known today as Dunbar High School. Come out and help us celebrate the life and achievements of Shirley Valerie Horn (1934-2005) was an American jazz singer and pianist. She was born and raised in Washington, DC. Aged 12, she studied piano and composition at Howard University, later graduating from there in classical music. She became enamored with the U Street jazz area of Washington, sneaking into jazz clubs before she was of legal age. She was most noted for her ability to accompany herself with nearly incomparable independence and ability on the piano while singing and for her rich, lush voice, a smoky contralto, which was described by noted producer and arranger Quincy Jones as "like clothing, as she seduces you with her voice." Come out and help us celebrate the life and achievements of Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) was an African-American sculptor and graphic artist best known for her depictions of the Black-American experience in the 20th century, which often focused on the female experience. She was born and raised in Washington, DC to parents working in education, and was the grandchild of formerly enslaved people. It was difficult for a black woman at this time to pursue a career as a working artist. Catlett devoted much of her career to teaching. However, a fellowship awarded to her in 1946 allowed her to travel to Mexico City, where she worked with the Taller de Gráfica Popular for twenty years and became head of the sculpture department for the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas.

May 11 Lucy Diggs Slowe Chess Challenge. In Wash DC on Sat, May 11. Event has an Open Section and multiple Scholastic Sections!! Please come out and help celebrate the life and achievements of Lucy Diggs Slowe (1885-1937) was an American educator and athlete. She was a tennis champion, winning the national title of the American Tennis Association's first tournament in 1917, the first African-American woman to win a major sports title. In 1919, the District of Columbia asked Slowe to create the first junior high school in its system for Black students and then appointed her as principal. She led Shaw junior high school until 1922, creating the first integrated in-service training for junior high school teachers in the District. Slowe then served for 15 years as the first Dean of Women at Howard University, the first Black woman to serve as Dean of Women at any American university. Get more event information at this link.

Come out and help us celebrate the life and achievements of James Mercer Langston Hughes (1901-1967) was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. One of the earliest innovators of the literary art form called jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. After traveling to West Africa and Europe in early adulthood, he moved to Washington, DC and began working as an assistant to historian Carter G. Woodson. As the work demands limited his time for writing, Hughes quit the position to work as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel. Hughes' time as a busboy inspired the name for the Busboys & Poets restaurants. More info at this link.

Annual Virginia Open SENIOR Championship: Friday Jun 7 - Sunday Jun 9, 5 rounds at G/90+30 time control. To be held in 2024 at the Country Inn & Suites in Fredericksburg, VA (same site as the Fredericksburg Open). Event is FIDE-rated. 30 Hotel Rooms are set aside for $99/night!  The Top-finishing Virginia player becomes the Commonwealth's Representative to participate in the annual National Invitational of State Senior Champions, which is being held in NORFOLK,VA in late July 2024!!  We also can send our 2nd finishing VA senior to participate in the event if the tournament has an odd number of players overall or in any round.
