The Richard K. Delaune Memorial Tournament is mutually sponsored by the Virginia Chess Federation and from private contributions to the Richard K. Delaune Memorial Fund. The Second Richard Delaune Memorial was held over the same Father's Day weekend in Springfield Virginia. A few less players showed up this time, but the memorial spirit was just as strong. NY GMs Joel Benjamin and John Fedorowicz came again to honor their friend. The reception was lengthened this year to avoid termination due to the 3rd round starting, but it still found the memorial process continuing and the chess clock pulling old friends away to the games.
The Open section last year finished in a 4-way tie and more people got
into the fun this year as it finished in a 5-way tie with 4-1 scores GM
Joel Benjamin took first on tiebreaks, followed closed by IM Larry Kaufman
and FM Thomas Bartell from NJ - these were the open section trophy
winners. Also scoring 4-1 were FMs Dov Gorman and Boris Privman. Larry
Kaufman's draws were against the GMs and Joel was held to a final round
draw in a tough game with Bartell. GM John Fedorowicz flew in strait from
a long week at a scholastic chess camp, and with a half point bye and
draws to Larry Kaufman and 13 yo Mark Heimann, finished just out of the
money. The U2300 prize was shared among seven players which can be see on
the final results. William
Marcelino was the only outright winner over the weekend as he took the
U2200 section with 4 wins and a last round bye for 4.5/5. Second was
shared by Matt Grinberg and Chris Bush as well as Joshua Lilly who had
perhaps the tournament of his relatively young life. Coming in at 1609, he
went 4-1, and turned in a 2121 performance to make his new rating 1748.
As trying to mimic the Open section, four players tied for first with
Annapolis' Curtis Winter taking first on tiebreak with a 4-1 score. Taking
second and third trophies were Glenn Shelton and Wil Acevedo. Pam Lee also
had 4 and took the Top Class D prize. Under 1200 money was taken by Brian
Higgins who scored 3.5.
