Volunteer!!

The tournament will have 6 rounds of chess for players in 5 grade-groups (sections):

  • 4 Scholastic Sections:

    • K-3:  Players attending a VA public, private, or home-based school in Virginia in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

    • K-5:  ... grades Kindergarten through 5th grade.

    • K-8:  ... grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.

    • K-12:  ... grades Kindergarten through 12th grade.  The top player (male or female) qualifies to represent Virginia at the annual Denker Tournament of High School Champions in August 2008 during the US Open.  And, the top Female player qualifies to represent the state at the Polgar National Girls Tournament also held in August 2008 during the US Open.  If our top player for the Denker Tournament happens to be Female, then the 2nd place Female in the HS section becomes the state's representative to the Polgar tournament.

  • One Collegiate Section:

    • Open to students attending any college or university in the state of VA and to Virginia residents attending another college or university out of state.  Players attending college while still in High School are not eligible to play in this section.  Players can be undergraduate or graduate students, but cannot be more than 25 years old as of September 1st, 2007.  Time controls and number of rounds will be the same as in the Scholastic Sections.  Prizes will both Trophies and cash.  Hey, we know you are in school!

  • Tournament Schedule

    • Friday, March 7th, 5PM-9PM at the School:
      • The Friday evening Check-in period is ONLY for players who need to pay, or who still need to Register for the tournament.  Everyone does not need to come to the Check-in desk

      • Check-in and Late Registration:  Players who have not yet registered for the event can register at the tournament site, BUT ONLY ON FRIDAY EVENING.  No entries on Saturday morning will be accepted.

      • If you have not mailed your $25 Advance Entry Fee (post-marking it by March 3rd), then you must pay by 9PM on Friday evening at the Tournament Site Any player who has not paid his/her entry fee will not be paired for Round 1 of the Tournament with out the express consent of the Chief Tournament Director, and only on a case-by-case basis.

    • Saturday, March 8th:  Welcome Ceremony 8:30AM.  Rounds 1-4 will be at the following times, respectively:  9AM, 12-noon, 3PM, and 6PM.

    • Sunday, March 9th:  Rounds 5 and 6, at 8:30AM and 12-noon, respectively.  Awards Ceremonies for each section will be held as soon as the last game finishes in that section.

    Time Controls

    • Rounds 1-3:  Game/60 (each player has 60 minutes to make his/her moves)

    • Rounds 4-6:  Game/90.

    Chess Equipment

    • The tournament is providing chess boards and pieces for all Scholastic Sections.

    • Players in the Collegiate Section may use their own sets, or use one provided by the tournament committee.

    • IF YOU OWN A CHESS CLOCK, PLEASE BRING IT!!

    Notation

    • Required in all sections except K-3.  We will provide Notation Sheets, but you must have your own pens or pencils.
