NOTE:  THE COLLEGIATE SECTION WILL BE PLAYED

Tournament Format & Player Eligibility

  • One Section for all Collegiate Players:  You must be enrolled in a VA College or University, or be a VA Resident attending a College/Univ out-of-state.  You can be an undergrad or a grad student, but you cannot be more than 25 years old as of September 1, 2007.  The Chief TD is the final authority for any questions regarding player eligibility.
  • This is an individual tournament using the Swiss-system format.  Individual scores count toward Team scores.

  • Teams:  A "team" is defined as two or more players attending the same college/university.  To determine a Team's score, we will add the individual scores for the Top 4 Players on a Team.  You only need to have 2 players to have a team.

  • 6 Rounds of Chess with the following Time Controls:

    • Rounds 1-3:  Game-in-60 Minutes.  Means that each player has 60 minutes to complete all of his/her moves.

    • Rounds 4-6:  Game-90.  Each player has 90 minutes.

A Few Tournament Rules
These rules supplement the US Chess Federation (USCF) Rule Book (5th ed) and apply only to this tournament.

  • Chess Equipment

    • Chess pieces and boards:  You can bring your own USCF-regulation set, or use one provided to you by the tournament officials.

    • Pens / Pencils:  Bring your own, we will not provide them at the tournament.

    • Chess ClocksIf you have a chess clock, please bring it ... and be sure your batteries are fresh.  Also, players are responsible for knowing how to set their own clocks, don't expect the Tournament Directors to help you.

  • Chess Notation:  Required.  If you have a religious or physical reason for not taking notation, inform the Section Chief.

  • Player PairingsPairings are created using USCF-approved computer software, with the pairings approved by the Chief TD before they are posted.  During the first 2 or 3 Rounds it is unlikely that teammates will be paired against one another.  However, the probability of this scenario increases in later Rounds when teammates are in contention for trophies.  Also, if there are only a few players in the Collegiate Section, it also is possible for someone to play the same opponent twice.

  • Ties:  Ties will be broken using the methods specified by the US Chess Federation.  Players or Teams tied for 1st place are considered "State Co-Champions."  However, the Player/Team with the best tie-break points will receive the 1st place trophy.  Individual tie-breaks used for trophies are Modified Median, Solkoff, Cumulative, Cumulative of Opposition. Team tie-breaks are Solkoff, Cumulative, Cumulative of Opposition.

  • Cash AwardsThere will be cash prizes in the Collegiate Section.  They are not determined using tie-breaks; rather, two players who tie for first will split the first and second place money equally.  The value of the cash awards will be based on the number of entries, and must pay for the trophies and other fees first.  No cash awards for Team performance, only for Individual performance.

  • Problems during the Game:  Raise your hand and wait for a TD. Stop the clock.  When a TD arrives at your board, state your issue and wait for the TD's reply.

  • When your Game is Finished:  Raise your hand and wait for a TD to arrive.  The TD will ensure your game's results are properly written on the Game Result Slip.  DO NOT LEAVE before you verify your game results with a TD.  Before you leave, reset the board and pieces, and don't forget to take your personal belongings with you.
