The new Senior Champion for the
Commonwealth of Virginia is William Marcelino. With three players
tied at 3 ½ tie, the title was won on tiebreaks over Tim Hamilton. Wayne
Christensen from South Carolina also finished with 3 ½ points. A few less people participated, 38,
than last year 44, but it was within prediction and everyone seemed to
have a good time. The Lincolnia Senior Center site provides a well-lit and
quiet environment for some quality chess. Last year’s champ Geoff McKenna came
to defend his title. He was held to a draw by Milo Nekvasil in Rd 2 and
with seven players at 2-0, the odds were against him repeating. Goran
Zalar held Geoff to a final round draw when a loss would have moved him
into the 3 ½ point leader group. Plenty of games represent the tournament this year, there are 16 to review, most of the top boards from Rds 2 and 3 are present.
