Final Standings

The new Senior Champion for the Commonwealth of Virginia is William Marcelino.  With three players tied at 3 ½ tie, the title was won on tiebreaks over Tim Hamilton. Wayne Christensen from South Carolina also finished with 3 ½ points.

A few less people participated, 38, than last year 44, but it was within prediction and everyone seemed to have a good time. The Lincolnia Senior Center site provides a well-lit and quiet environment for some quality chess.

Last year’s champ Geoff McKenna came to defend his title. He was held to a draw by Milo Nekvasil in Rd 2 and with seven players at 2-0, the odds were against him repeating.  Goran Zalar held Geoff to a final round draw when a loss would have moved him into the 3 ½ point leader group.

William Marcelino, doing the Virginia imitation of Larry Kaufman winning the World Senior in his first opportunity, took the title on tiebreaks in his 50th year.  His final round game with Tim Hamilton decided the event with his main competitor, whose opponents did just a tiny bit worse than did William’s.

Plenty of games represent the tournament this year, there are 16 to review, most of the top boards from Rds 2 and 3 are present.
